Our SEND Ethos
At Bewbush Community Nursery C.I.C., we believe that every child has the right to feel valued, included and supported to reach their full potential. We celebrate every child’s unique strengths and work in partnership with families and other professionals to provide an inclusive, nurturing environment where all children can learn, play and thrive together.
About us
We are situated inside the Bewbush Crawley Family Hub, Dorsten Square, Bewbush that has a large car park just outside the front door which makes drop off and collections convenient and safe.
We have a large team of adults who are committed to supporting all children in breaking down barriers to learning and providing a challenging environment to ensure that all children achieve their full potential.
All children are supported through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which enables us to plan learning opportunities based on each child’s interests, stage of development and individual needs.
The nursery has recently been fully renovated which gave us opportunity to replace all the furniture and resources to ensure we could meet the needs of all the current children while also allowing space for new resources to support future children’s individual needs.
Accessibility information
The nursery building is fully accessible; it is all on one level with slopes at doorways for ease of access. There is accessible changing and toilet facilities in the hub building for any families that may need to use it before or after the session times and the nursery has two accessible nappy changing areas for during session time.
The SENDCo will be available for parents to discuss any concerns that they may have with their child’s development, this is the foundations for all children to have their needs assessed and met in nursery.
Our Support Package
The nursery SENDCo is Claire Carney.
Claire has over 30 years’ experience working with children from 3 months to 18 years of age across a variety of childcare and education settings. She has been a SENDCo in several of these settings and has specialised in early years since 2008. She achieved her level 6 in Early Years and Childcare in 2020 and holds a current level 3 Award for Special Educational Needs Coordinators in Early Years Settings.
Claire oversees children’s learning and development across the nursery and leads on the identification and assessment of children who may have additional needs or barriers to learning. She works closely with families, key persons and external professionals to ensure appropriate support is planned and implemented.
All children will have a family keyperson as soon as they start in the nursery, the family keyperson will support each child’s development through individual planning and assessment. Next steps will be written termly for each child and the child’s individual outcomes will be updated, this will enable us to identify any gaps in learning and development quickly and adjust planning appropriately. We follow the graduated approach of Assess, Plan, Do, Review to identify children’s strengths, recognise any barriers to learning and ensure support is regularly reviewed and adapted to meet individual needs.
The child’s individual outcomes will be reviewed regularly throughout their time at nursery and, with parental consent, shared with their receiving school to support a smooth transition.
For any child who has had any barriers or additional needs identified the keyperson will work alongside the SENDCo to write up a one page profile which will state important information that the whole staff team should know about the child so they can be supported fully while in nursery. Children with SEND are fully included in all aspects of nursery life. Activities are adapted where necessary so every child can access learning, play and experiences alongside their peers.
Applying For a Space
All families will be offered a show round after they have completed an expression of interest form where a senior member of staff will show the whole nursery and will answer any questions that you may have. The Nursery SENDCo will be available for you to speak to if necessary.
One settling-in session is usually offered. However, this can be adapted to meet individual family needs, depending on the time of year and Local Authority funding requirements, including headcount dates.
If you have any concerns regarding your children’s learning and/or development then please do not hesitate to speak to the SENDCo via email, phone call or face to face if time allows.
Working Together
We use the secure online learning journal Tapestry to share all children’s learning, the family keyperson will be responsible for uploading observations to the site which can only be seen by the parents who are registered, these will be uploaded regularly after being authorised by senior staff. Parents are encouraged to upload observations too of any new skills or significant events that have happened as a family such as birthday celebrations.
There is also opportunities for meetings between parents/carers and the family keyperson, these are usually able to be arranged for a time that is suitable for both parties, however, it is usually best to arrange for either drop off or collection time for the family.
We work closely with receiving schools and other settings to ensure a smooth transition. Where appropriate, additional visits, transition books and meetings with parents and professionals can be arranged to help children feel confident about moving on.
We work in partnership with a range of professionals, including Speech and Language Therapists, Health Visitors, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Educational Psychologists, the Early Years SEND Team and Community Paediatricians where appropriate.
Areas of Need
Through early identification, inclusive practice, and strong partnerships, we strive to ensure that all children feel safe, supported, and able to thrive during their time with us. Whatever a child’s starting point, we are committed to working in partnership with families and professionals to ensure every child is supported to achieve the very best outcomes.
We recognise that children may require support in one or more of the four broad areas of SEND identified in the SEND Code of Practice: Communication and Interaction, Cognition and Learning, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH), and Sensory and/or Physical Needs.
We recognise that some children may have additional health or medical needs. Where required, we will access specialist training and guidance from relevant healthcare professionals to ensure staff have the knowledge, skills and confidence to meet each child’s individual needs safely. Individual Healthcare Plans will be developed in partnership with parents, carers and health professionals and reviewed regularly.
All staff are committed to ongoing professional development and regularly update their SEND knowledge through training. Where a child has specific or emerging needs, we will seek additional specialist training and advice to ensure we can provide the most appropriate support and meet their individual needs effectively.
How we identify children who may need additional support.
We monitor every child’s progress through ongoing observation, assessment and discussion with parents and carers. If concerns arise regarding a child’s development, the Key Person and SENDCo will work with the family to identify appropriate support. Where necessary, advice may be sought from external professionals, always with parental consent.
